Web applications and Websites

Updated: May 10, 2022

We can define a web-page as a collection of text, images, sounds, videos, graphics and links to other web-page. A webpage is a digital page that can be viewed through a web browser. And, since web browsers are present on every computer on the Internet, web pages are the most common way to share digital pages.

A webpage can also be connected/linked to other webpages through links (called Hyperlink). When clicked on the link, it takes you to that new webpage. This combination of digital text, images, videos, graphics, sounds etc. along with links to other web pages, is called Hypertext. A webpage is generally written using Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML).

Web pages can be static or dynamic. Static pages show the same content every time they are displayed on web browser. Dynamic pages have content that can change each time they are viewed.

Website

A website is a collection of static HTML web pages. Just as a book is a collection of a number of pages on a particular subject, a website is a collection of related webpages.

These webpages are stored (hosted) on internet connected computers, called web-servers.

Web apps

A web application is a website with dynamic functionality on the web-server and now frequently on the client (browser) side using different JavaScript frameworks or other interactive elements.

Web applications use HTML forms or other interactive elements as the user interface to the computer program or code that is running on the server computer.

Data is passed from the HTML forms to Server side program using HTTP request stream. The Server response is sent in the HTTP response stream. In this way, functionality of a web application is delivered to the end users.
