What is ROM?

In this blog article, we talk about ROM.

Read-Only Memory

Read-Only memory (ROM) is a type of memory used in computers and other electronic devices.

Data stored in ROM cannot be electronically modified after the manufacture of the memory device.

  • In computers, ROM is a small memory chip located on the motherboard.

  • ROM is a primary memory that is read only, which means data can only be read from it.

  • ROM is non-volatile which means the contents of ROM are not lost when the power is turned off.

  • ROM chip on the motherboard contains the booting (power-on startup) instructions that a computer needs for booting up.

  • Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is stored in a ROM.

  • ROM is fast memory, but it is slower than RAM.

  • ROM capacity is smaller compared to RAM.

  • ROM capacity cannot be increased.
