What is a Web application?

A web application is a software application that is accessed over computer networks such as the Internet or an organization's intranet.

Browser as the vehicle for app delivery

Web applications are popular due to the ubiquity of Web browsers. A Web browser is a software which is used to view and interact with websites and web applications. Today, Web browsers such as Firefox, Chrome or Microsoft Edge etc. are available on every desktop, laptop and smartphones.

The convenience of using a Web browser as a client, sometimes also called a thin client, has completely changed the delivery of software applications to end users.

The ability to update and maintain Web applications without distributing and installing software on potentially thousands of client computers is a key reason for their popularity, as is the inherent support for cross-platform compatibility.

For example, Firefox or Chrome browser, which works on both Windows and Linux computers, are used to create, edit and share documents on Google Docs or Sheets, providing cross-platform compatibility for Google Docs or Sheets applications.

As more and more software applications are being delivered via web browsers, clearly web applications are the future, which is already here!
